Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.
Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.
Players are granted the option to challenge certain rulings from the official, following the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
Practical Application
A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
