Now is right to alter Manchester United's formation - Amorim insists.

Man Utd skipper Bruno Fernandes was one of seven first-team players to miss the holiday period win against Newcastle.

Boss Ruben Amorim argues that switching Man Utd's formation due to media scrutiny would have signaled "his demise" for him.

Initially against Newcastle, Amorim moved away from his usual back three setup with wide defenders and chose to field an traditional four-man defense shielded by two defensive midfielders.

He himself conceded this ultimately functioned as a six-man defensive block in the closing phase as his squad held on for a crucial result - securing just their second-ever clean sheet of the campaign.

While he once memorably remarked that not even the Pope could pressure him to adjust his approach, Amorim asserts the ability to play with alternative formations has remained part of his plan.

Nevertheless, he stresses he could only alter the tactics when his team were faring at an acceptable level - otherwise it would appear as if he was giving in to outside noise.

"When I came here the previous campaign, I recognized perhaps I lacked the squad to excel in that formation, but it was the start of a process," he stated.

"Our aim was to forge an identity. Today is a different moment. We lack a full complement of players, and we need adapt, so they understand why we are changing.

"This isn't because of the pressure of the media, or the faithful.

"Whenever you criticize altering the system constantly, I can't make a change because the squad will understand I'm altering things because of you and I think that is the downfall for the coach.

"When we are getting results in our preferred setup, that is the opportunity to adapt.

"This will help us become a more complete side because when our full complement of players are back, we are not intending to employ a back three exclusively."

Squad Issues Persist

With only two wins in their last eight outings before defeating Newcastle, it is arguable whether Amorim is accurate to say his team have been in good form.

He is, however, operating with a severely stretched roster, with multiple first-team players already unavailable for the upcoming fixture against struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That figure will rise if midfielder Mason Mount is unable to recover the injury that led to his exit from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is a key name who will miss the Wolves match, even though he is understood to be pressing his manager to let him to return after his hamstring injury.

"Bruno is already saying he needs to practice," revealed Amorim. "But there is absolutely no possibility he is going to feature against Wolves. No chance. You can quote me on that."

Fernandes' Role Endures

Nevertheless, the Portuguese star will probably still be a prominent presence, as whereas most injured players view matches from the stands, Fernandes was observed keeping a close eye on the pre-match routines from the entrance of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim anticipates his leader to carry on offering input.

"The guy is a leader," he stated. "He cannot be that guy that when he is not playing, he's silent and offering advice. He's always vocal. That's why he's the captain.

"There are flaws at times - his mannerisms he gesticulates - but he has a lot of good things. Even after he finishes treatment, he heads to observe the other guys training. There are a lot of things you don't see.

"I'm not sure if he desires my job or not, but he's a leader. He is a true captain."

Recovery Schedule for Key Personnel

Although the exact date for Fernandes' return - and that of other unavailable players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - is uncertain, by the end of January, United will see the return of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from continental competition.
