European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
