Coordinated Anglo-French Aerial Assault Targets Islamic State Munitions Store in the Syrian region
RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.
The site, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.
British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he added. "They were among a great many British troops on duty over the festive period. This operation, to take out militants who endanger our security, highlights how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."
In December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, following an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
